The Happy Index

James Nye reviews James Timpson’s book The Happy Index.

Sum up

I found this book a really easy read and it delivers first-hand examples of why running a people first business leads to success. James Timpson has clearly walked the walk and shares candidly some of the structures and results of putting staff happiness at the core of the business, many of which are easy to adopt.

The really juicy bit

Flipping the business from a top-down corporate mandate to focus primarily on supporting teams is a clear case for empowering the front line. Some of the ideas here may appear radical, but what I liked about this book is that it puts employee welfare at the commercial cornerstone of a business rather than treating it as an ambiguous nicety.

The one takeaway that I keep coming back to is the hiring framework. It is a really simple way of making sure you recruit the right people to foster the right culture in your business.
