Frequently Asked Questions

You might find the answer here

Whether you’re interested in supporting the movement, exploring partnership opportunities or simply learning more about our work, we’ve answered some common questions here. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please get in touch.

The Good Apple Effect is a catalyst movement focused on reducing misuse of power and bullying in hospitality, whilst shining a light on the positive impact the sector sees when they are reduced.

We encourage conversations, share practical resources, bring together different voices and signpost people to specialist support when needed.

Our belief is simple and straightforward: hospitality is better without misuse of power and bullying. When they are reduced, the sector benefits from better culture, better business and is perceived more positively.

A catalyst movement helps start conversations, raise awareness, provide practical tools and encourage positive change.

The Good Apple Effect is not an investigative body, counselling service or legal adviser. It exists to shine a light on misuse of power and bullying in hospitality, and on the positive impact the sector sees when they are reduced.

By sharing stories, evidence, learning and practical resources, we hope to encourage conversations and inspire action.

We believe hospitality performs better without bullying.

If you’re not the experts, what is your role?

The Good Apple Effect has expertise in convening, storytelling, hospitality, awareness, communication and bringing people together. What we do not claim is to be the expert in every specialist discipline connected to misuse of power and bullying.

We are a catalyst movement. Think of us as a facilitator rather than a lecturer. Or, if you prefer, a convener rather than a guru.

Our role is to encourage conversations, raise awareness, share practical resources and bring together people, knowledge, experience, different perspectives and solutions.

Where specialist support is needed, we signpost people to organisations and individuals with deeper expertise.

We believe progress happens when people, businesses, charities, researchers, practitioners and those with lived experience come together and contribute to the conversation.

A question for you – will you become part of the conversation?

The Good Apple Effect references ACAS guidance as the foundation for how we think about bullying and misuse of power.

Bullying is behaviour that is offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting, and which undermines, humiliates or diminishes someone.

Misuse of power is when position, authority or influence is used in a way that creates unfair pressure, limits someone’s voice or disadvantages them.

No.

The Good Apple Effect is not an investigative body, counselling service or legal adviser.

Our role is to raise awareness, encourage conversations, develop practical resources and shine a light on the positive impact the sector sees when misuse of power and bullying are reduced.

Where appropriate, we will signpost people to organisations and individuals with the specialist knowledge and expertise to provide support.

Whilst we may not be the right organisation to investigate your case, we hope the Good Apple Effect helps create a hospitality sector where fewer people need to ask that question.

If you have been affected by bullying, misuse of power or other difficult experiences at work, you do not have to face them alone.

The Good Apple Effect is not a counselling service, but we can signpost you to trusted organisations, including Hospitality Action and the Licensed Trade Charity.

Both provide confidential support, practical guidance and, where appropriate, access to counselling and other specialist services.

Reaching out for support can be the first step towards feeling better and moving forward.

Absolutely not.

Hospitality is one of the most exciting, rewarding and enjoyable industries in the world. It creates careers, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories and millions of interactions of genuine hospitality every single day. We should be proud of that.

But like every sector, it has its challenges.

Misuse of power and bullying exist in hospitality, and when they do, the impact can be far greater than many people realise. They affect confidence, wellbeing, performance, retention, recruitment and, ultimately, the guest experience.

The Good Apple Effect was not created because we believe hospitality is a bad industry. Quite the opposite.

It was created because we believe hospitality is a brilliant industry that deserves to be even better.

Our belief is simple – hospitality is better without misuse of power and bullying. Better culture. Better Business.

What is the story of Granny Smith and Braeburn apples?

It’s one of my favourite questions because the answer explains why the Good Apple Effect exists. Rather than try to explain it in writing, watch founder Elton Mouna tell you the story
